dose of talent: karoline hermansen

KAROLINE HERMANSEN
today, thanks to pinterest, i discovered the inspiring work of  karoline hermansen and i just had to share!
below are some pictures of her work and a link to an article on artsthread.com.
i hope you find her work as exciting as i do.  peace

"hyseas - ArtsThread Portfolio From Karoline Hermansen: The inspiration behind Karoline’s collection comes from her fascination with the sea, in particular corals. She wanted to study the free-flowing shapes, textures and vibrant colours and capture the qualities in a variety of methods and mediums.

The technical aspect of re-creating these forms through a knitted medium found numerous challenges. From primary research Karoline transformed ordinary materials into complex and unexpected knitted pieces by combining yarns such as elastic and cotton coated Nylon. She was able manipulate machine techniques by creating 3D surfaces and hybrid structures through knotting techniques. The technical process of creating a knitted three-dimensional form is an important aspect in her practice.

Karoline’s final collection of fabrics is for a fashion context and challenge ideas of conventional knitted garments. The vivid aesthetic creates fresh and energetic textiles."

Artist Statement

My sculpture and other works focus on the delicate balance between nature versus human society and technology. The duality of this relationship is explored in both materials and subject matter. The combination of the two factions produce mysterious yet familiar forms. For example, both feathered helmets and chestnut pods encased in carpet tacks serve as a proverbial "call-to-arms" for environmental protection. Human figures shaped from twigs and branches offer a less heavy-handed reminder of our covenant with mother nature.

In my art, I strive to replicate the animated quality that all living things possess. That is what makes nature beautiful. My job as an environmental artist is to capture that beauty in my work while instilling a message into it. - M.L.
